In un’epoca di incantamento del mondo, dove gli scogli parlano, le creature sognate escono dai sogni ed entrano nella realtà, e le serpi compaiono con i capelli pettinati a treccia, a crocchia, a ‘tuppo’, si rivela che gli spiriti ritornano fra gli uomini in forma zoomorfa.
Un immaginario in cui il fantastico, il meraviglioso e l’onirico s’intrecciano dando vita a emozionanti narrazioni dove anche la presenza delle streghe è marcata. Esibendo la loro arcaica nudità, le streghe in volo si palesano agli uomini. Il loro tratto più inquietante lo mostrano trasformandosi in nuvole e in vento per inseguire sul mare i naviganti o anche rubando le barche ai pescatori.
Racconti e credenze narrati, per la prima volta nella storia dell’arcipelago, dalla voce dei suoi abitanti durante un’etnografia che ha preso l’avvio oltre quarant’anni fa, sullo sfondo di una maestosa natura vulcanica.
L’autrice documenta aspetti della cultura insulare che non erano mai stati indagati, riuscendo anche a fare emergere dal mondo stregonesco dove erano celate le storie vere delle donne che esercitavano il mestiere della pesca.
