Tra la fine degli anni Venti e gli anni Quaranta del Novecento prende forma e si consolida l’immagine di Don Bosco che, tra le tante, diverrà iconica e sarà continuamente riproposta fino ad oggi. La beatificazione del sacerdote piemontese (1929) e la successiva canonizzazione (1934) mettono in moto un processo selettivo che privilegia una fotografia del santo scattata da Michele Schemboche, allievo di Nadar e tra i pionieri della fotografia in Italia. I dipinti che rielaborano la foto vengono a sua volta fotografati per favorire un’ampia diffusione in immaginette e cartoline e ispirano a una serie di figurine Liebig alla metà degli anni Quaranta e, in parte, anche la monumentale biografia bestseller del santo, firmata dal disegnatore belga Joseph Gillain, in arte Jijé. Alla nascita dell’icona del sacerdote piemontese è dedicato Il santo educatore. Don Bosco nell’immaginario popolare.
“Una serie di anniversari e di coincidenze fa convergere, agli inizi degli anni Quaranta del Novecento, due avvenimenti di grande rilievo per la ricostruzione dell’iconografia di Don Bosco, figura centrale nella storia della cultura popolare cattolica e patrono di apprendisti, giovani, editori, educatori e pedagogisti”, spiega l’autore. “Il primo è l’edizione di una serie di figurine Liebig dedicata al Santo piemontese, composta di sei immagini che mettono in rilievo il profilo educativo del sacerdote e le sue più felici intuizioni: oratori festivi, scuole serali, professionali e agrarie, collegi e missioni salesiane. Le immagini di queste carte povere, espressioni di un’iconografia ludica e didattica di impronta borghese, laica e positivista, portano in scena i momenti salienti di una vita esemplare secondo i canoni della letteratura agiografica. Innovatore popolare e cristiano, ottimista e antiborghese, Don Bosco mostra il cammino per realizzare nuove organizzazioni sociali adattandosi ai cambiamenti storici, ma senza rinunciare a una decisa tensione visionaria”.
