Narra la storia di Joseph Cornell, artista statunitense, famoso per le sue scatole, che nacque nel 1903 e morì nel 1972.
Le illustrazioni in questo albo sembrano coprire le parole, gli oggetti della collezione troneggiano e vincono le parole, i cui caratteri tipografici sono piccoli e spesso stampati su fondo scuro da non essere, in alcuni casi, immediatamente rintracciabili. Illustrazioni e colori sono dunque funzionali alla narrazione, altre volte invece sostituiscono addirittura le parole: un libro fatto ad Arte!
La narrazione attraversa la vita dell’artista dagli otto ai tredici anni, periodo in cui nasce e si sviluppa la sua passione per il collezionismo. Joey è appoggiato dai suoi familiari, dalla madre, dal padre e dai fratelli: «Qualche giorno dopo, Joey distribuì dei biglietti d’ingresso alla famiglia. Quando aprirono la porta del fienile, rimasero senza parole. Decine di oggetti qualsiasi erano stati assemblati, assortiti, disposti in un modo che li rendeva»
