È la notte della vigilia e il mondo è diviso in due: da una parte ci sono Babbo Natale e gli Elfi che portano i doni ai bambini buoni, dall’altra gli Skramp che hanno il compito di consegnare gli incubi ai bambini cattivi, perché, come dice il loro capo, Gran Buio, senza la paura il mondo vivrebbe nel caos. Jack è lo Skramp più bravo e veloce a preparare i brutti sogni, ma non è più così sicuro di volerlo fare e ha in mente un piano per cambiare tutto.
Finito nel quartier generale di Babbo Natale dopo aver cercato di rubargli la slitta, mentre tenta di fuggire, Jack si ritrova all’improvviso catapultato in un mondo misterioso in compagnia dell’elfa Fanny: è l’inizio di un’avventura che lo porterà lungo “La via dei Giocattoli”, dove da tempo non scendono più gli Elfi e Babbo Natale e dove vagano disperate le anime dei giochi.
Il protagonista è Jack, affiancato da creature dai nomi bizzarri: Smocciasciarpa, Sprizzaocchi, Spelato, Sottiletta, Ricy Ricciutella. Indossa Gilè, apparentemente un normalissimo indumento, che però comunica con lui raffigurando immagini, spesso illustrazioni di noti film horror, che il lettore si divertirà a indovinare. Nonostante la grande rivalità, Skramp Jack si troverà fianco a fianco di Fanny, un’elfa speciale con il cappello a punta color corteccia, i riccioli e un paio di bellissimi occhi verdi, così diversa da quegli ”elfacci” con cui gli capita di fare a botte. Con lei affronterà pericoli e imprevisti e imparerà ad andare oltre le apparenze.
Accompagnano le avventure di Skramp Jack le illustrazioni in bianco e nero, scenografiche e suggestive, di Stefano Tamburrini, che riesce a trasformare in immagini le peculiarità di ciascun personaggio, dando al racconto un’atmosfera fantastica, dove creature immaginarie emergono dalle pagine e incuriosiscono il lettore. Non mancano citazioni legate al mondo del cinema e alla contemporaneità, in un gioco di rimandi con il testo.
