Le scimmie sono le nostre cugine più prossime. Noi, i cosiddetti umani, abbiamo in comune con esse molte caratteristiche morfologiche, genetiche e comportamentali, ad esempio, la forma dello scheletro, dei muscoli, la circolazione del sangue, come funzionano gli organi di senso e in ultimo, il più importante, il Sistema Nervoso Centrale (morfologiche).
Per caratteristiche comportamentali non si devono intendere solo quelle più comuni, quali l’alimentazione, la difesa del territorio, l’attività sessuale e la cura per la prole, ma anche quelle più complesse e collegate alle funzioni psicologiche quali la memoria, l’apprendimento e altre attività cognitive ritenute fino a poco tempo fa qualità tipicamente umane, come l’intelligenza, la socialità, l’altruismo, la solidarietà, l’empatia, la vendetta, anche quella trasversale, l’avversione all’iniquità, l’inganno, il contro-inganno, persino l’omosessualità.
Accanto a questo non va dimenticato che recentemente si è aperto anche un interesse culturale che ha messo in primo piano l’animale, le scimmie in particolare, con tutte le sue sfaccettature, incluse quelle psicologiche; infatti nel loro volto riviviamo, per esempio, l’alterigia e la malizia dell’uomo e dei nostri pensieri, gli aspetti peggiori della nostra personalità o altri angoli reconditi del nostro sfrenato narcisismo ed egocentrismo. Le scimmie giocano, maneggiano e costruiscono oggetti, si procurano cibo, gestiscono la loro vita con dei modelli sociali…
